571 | Tristan Vaz Teixeira, 1st Captain Grantee of Machico Tristao Vaz Teixeira (c. 1395-1480) was according to Zurara, squire of the Infante D. Henrique, whom he accompanied to Ceuta and Tangier, where he proved to be "a very burning man". Later knighted. With João Gonçalves Zarco and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, he discovered the islands of Porto Santo and Madeira (1419-1420) , which he was charged with colonizing. He later populated the island of Madeira in 1425. He was responsible for the captaincy of Machico with a donation letter dated 11 May 1440. He organized several expeditions to Africa, with his caravels. For abuse of authority, he was exiled from his jurisdiction to which he returned pardoned in 1452. He married Branca Teixeira and left numerous descendants, today widely spread across the archipelago. He died in Silves at an advanced age where he had gone on business. In this village, a notary, Pierre Maniquet. Little is known about him except that in 1465 he bought land at La Buissière and that he would leave this world before August 19, 1522, the date when his heirs would share it. Two sons will survive him: Claude Maniquet, who will succeed his father as a notary at La Buissière, and who will follow Barthélémy Maniquet, who will travel beyond the Dauphiné, to Rive-de-Gier en Forez, where he will marry Léonarde d'Aussère, the only daughter of the local notary, to whom he will succeed.
